Auschwitz-Birkenau
The first transport of 728 Polish political prisoners arrived at the camp from Tarnow,Poland on June 14,1940. It is regarded that the camp started operating from that date on. Of the more then one million people deported to Auschwitz, around 400.000 people were registered and placed at the camp: approx. 200.000 Jews,almost 150.000 Poles, approx. 15.00 Romanies (Gypsies), approx. 15.000 Soviet POW's and 25.000 prisoners belonging to other nationalities.More ten 50% died there. At the time of liberation, there were about 7.000 people still in the camp.
